I need to know the name of a book I read along time ago. A poverty stricken world where all books are destroye?

All literature was destroyed and a young boy was sent out to confiscate an old man's property. He still had scrolls and books and lived in a run down building of some sort. There was a young princess who was ruler of all the land. And theboy had to travel to her for some reason... I know it's not much but that's all I can remember.
